CRE Partners Newsletter -- Volume 1, Number 13 -- November 20, 2003

"Bridging the Gap between Real Estate and Technology"

In the last six months, our number of readers has tripled!  That tells me there continues to be a strong need for an educational and informative news source on telecommunications and technology issues.  CRE Partners will be publishing many more newsletters with feature buildings, hot topics, and informative articles.  However, your feedback is essential to our success, so this newsletter focuses on soliciting *your* input.  And for all our new readers, this issue also includes an overview of some of the topics we have covered in the last six months...

NEC Requirements on Abandoned Cabling
Our last issue on the NEC changes on abandoned cabling generated our highest "read-rate" and feedback to-date.  It is important to point out that the NEC is regarded as a "standard" -- but is not a requirement of building codes unless your local municipality adopts it as code.  So, the first step is to find out whether the 2002 NEC has been incorporated into your local building codes.

ACTION ITEM:  It has been reported that over 30 buildings in Atlanta have already been cited for NEC cable violations.  Has your building been affected yet?  Please contact CRE Partners and let us know if the 2002 NEC has been adopted by your local municipality and whether there has been any action by local inspectors on abandoned cabling in your building.  Contact your local electrical inspector if you're not sure.  We will post all responses and comments to our web site (anonymously, if you like) for the benefit of all our readers.

Contact BOMA International for more information about their audio seminar on this topic December 11, 2003, www.boma.org.

In-Building Wireless for First Responders
If you missed our previous article on this topic, you can read it here.  Many local jurisdictions around the country have already implemented some kind of building code requirement for the installation of in-building wireless systems to support emergency communications.  Here is a list of cities who have adopted such code requirements:

Boston, MA                                    West Hartford, CT                      City of Tempe, AZ
Sacramento County, CA                City of Sparks, NV                     Grapevine, TX
City of Burbank, CA                       City of Tooele, UT                       Hampshire, IL
City of Folsom, CA                         City of Scottsdale, AZ                Broward, FL
City of Ontario, CA                         Sarpy, NE                                   City and County of Broomfield, CO

ACTION ITEM:  We are aware of activity in New York City and the state of Virginia reviewing similar ordinances.  Has your city/county adopted code changes requiring the installation of in-building systems for emergency communications?  Do you  know if there is any local activity currently reviewing such code changes?  Please contact CRE Partners if you have any information about this issue in your market.
